How To Solder Solid Wires Together
For all solid or all stranded wires.
How to solder solid wires together. This will heat the wire to allow your solder to melt. After tinning the heads of both header and wire put them together. Now we will bring the hot iron tip to this joint to melt the metal a little bit.
Step 3 Plug the soldering guniron into an electrical outlet and allow it to heat up for about three to five minutes. You simply touch the freshly tinned tip of your soldering iron onto the bare wires for a couple of seconds and then apply the solder at which point it will smoke and flow over the wires almost immediately and you can withdraw the solder and then the iron and you should be left with a bright silver joint like the one below. You interweave the threads of the wires together before soldering the joint solid.
For large gauge wires 14awg for an antenna perhaps make a Western Union splice then solder it. You can bend the solder joint to one side but then youre left. In this way we will solder both tips together to strengthen the bond.
As the melt will start to cool down the bond will get strong. The process for soldering 3 wires together is the same as splicing 2 4 or even 10 of them. For small wire form a shepherds crook in each wire to link them together or twist them together pigtail splice them solder.
Hold it on the wire for 3-4 seconds. Dont use too much. Bend the wire into the desired shape.
Strip off about 1 inch of the insulation from each end of the two wires using the wire strippers. The challenge is holding the wires in place long enough for the solder to cure. Use a thin solid wire 28 AWG-30 AWG and wrap it around both wires.
