How To Use Solder Sponge
The brass sponge is ok but it seems you do have to train it so it doesnt splatter the solder but stabbing motions into it seem to not splatter the solder compared to just laying it on top of it and rolling the iron like you do on a wet sponge.
How to use solder sponge. Most soldering stations however ship with a sponge that you moisten prior to each use. Soak the sponge in water and rub it over the tip of the soldering iron for a couple of minutes. To use press the plunger down at the end of the solder sucker.
There is an argument to be made that it is better to use a brass wire sponge instead of a moist cleaning sponge. The wick will fill up so kindly pull the wick over the joint and your iron and the solder will move into it as it relinquishes. Using the moist cleaning sponge on a hot soldering tip can cause thermal shock and micro fractures.
Then wet the spong with Fantastictm and water and wring out. It also became apparent that the lead-free alloys when clean with a wet or moist sponge would accelerate the cracking of the plating on the tip of the soldering iron. Avoid applying too much abrasive solder wicks or dry sponges to remove solder from the iron tip.
Touching the heated iron can cause second- or third-degree burns. It should be damp not dripping wet. The best way to do this is to lift it out the stand and hold it under a cold tap for a moment then squeeze to remove excess water.
Heat the joint with your soldering iron and place the tip of the solder sucker over the hot solder. Distilled water is used primarily as a solvent for reagent preparation as a calibration standard or analytical blank for cleaning testing equipment and rinsing an analyte. It should be used in all equipment sterilization Deionized water is used when an application requires a soft solvent.
Now lets look at how to use soldering irons properly and how to put things right when a joint goes wrong. To make one get a cellulose sponge cut slits in it like you find in commercial solder sponges and alos cut a hole in the middle. Heat the soldering iron and use a moist sponge to clean the surface.
